RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Mixing different liquids with baking soda.
PREZI:
NOTES: The vinager is not pure but only 5 percent acetic acid the rest is water. For the best fizz use 1200 grams of vinegar and 84 grams of NaHCO2 (baking soda) this is one mole of each obviously you can change ...When you mix baking sodaand vinegar it becomes like a volcano.I've had these two boxes as staples in my baking supplies forever as do most of homes. We follow the instructions to use one or the other (or both) in our recipes but do we know why?I knew that baking soda makes great volcanoes when mixed with vinegar but why do some recipes use baking soda and some baking powder? I read that the same ingredient, sodium bicarbonate, is in both but there is something more in baking powder. I did some experiments (as all ex-chemistry students like to do – or is it just me?)
QUESTIONS:What is the effect on baking soda if we add two different liquids?
ANSWERS: The effect was that the liquid that has more acid will have a stronger reaction than the other liquids with less acid.
HYPOTHESIS: THE MORE YOU ADD BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR IT GOES UP.
MATERIALS
contaners
vinegar
2 litter soda (coca cola and fanta)
baking soda
2 different size of spoon
camera.
PROCEDURE:Get three containers and label it one with a label that has soda (coca cola) then the other one with fanta flavor orange then the third with the label that says vinegar. Then, we put three big spoons of vinegar on the three containers that are soda (coca cola), fanta flavor orange, and vinegar. After that, we put three little spoons of baking soda on the three containers with soda (coca cola), fanta flavor orange, and vinegar. Finally, we just see how does the soda(coca cola), fanta flavor orange, and the vinegar reac with the vinegar and the baking soda.
RESULTS: The vinegar had more reaction then the soda fanta and coca cola because when we put the vinegar and the baking soda on the soda fanta and coca cola it made the same reaction but it was not that much of a reaction but when we put the baking soda in the vinegar it made a big reaction.
DATA COLLECTION:
Number of Table Spoons
6 Table Spoons
6 table Spoons
6 Table spoons
The amount it went :
It went up 10 inches
It went up 10 inches
It went up 16 inches
BIBLIOGRAPHY:
The bicorbonate in the baking soda has a great effect on certain liquids. The liquids with more acid will have a stronger reaction than other liquids with less acid.
